Sharing HOPE
Alaska to South East Asia
The stated goal of HOPE worldwide - Alaska Chapter International Outreach is:The primary focus of the Alaska Chapter is to localizes HOPE worldwide’s international vision, which is “to bring hope and change the lives of the world's most poor, sick and suffering.”  However, we want to help implement this vision on the international scale as well.

“To empower Alaska’s professionals to use their talent and skills to serve in developing countries: Guided by a spirit of compassion and service, we endeavor to raise awareness of the world’s poor by building partnerships with international HOPE worldwide programs and their affiliates for the purposes of team building and resource exchange.”

Our most recent international endeavor included sending a team of 10 volunteers to Manila, Philippines and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The goal of the trip was for volunteers to provide educational & administrative support as well as supplies to the Center of HOPE in Manila, Philippines and the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE on Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We hoped volunteers would also learn from their counterparts how they have effectively integrated community based services for their populations and bring this knowledge home to serve Alaskans.”

In the Philippines, volunteers spent one and a half weeks at the Village of HOPE in Laguna Beach which serves children and families at risk. They participated in the daily activities at the center, which include child abuse prevention programs, a residential program for youth at risk and family counseling. Volunteers travelled to Baseco Island, a garbage dump where many families at risk live, to witness the living conditions and work of HOPE ww there. They participated in relief activities to victims of the typhoons and flooding by helping deliver rice at Baseco.

In Cambodia, volunteers for the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE spent their time observing the working conditions in the hospital and clinics and training the nursing staff. Two of the volunteers travelled to the Battambang Province to teach community CPR to a group of about 35 people.  The following topics were taught throughout the week: Conflict Resolution for Nurse Managers, Communication Barriers in Sending Messages to Staff, The Team Approach Model, Operating Room Safety: Positioning, Operating Room Safety: “Time Outs,” Trauma Care and Triage in the ER (three lectures),  Critical Thinking Skills for Nurse Educators, Conducting an Effective Case Analysis and the difference between bacterial, fungal and spore colonization on surgical instrumentation and proper “cook” times for surgical implants. Additional lectures were developed for the nurse educators on: Breast Cancer Screening, Type II Diabetes, Cervical Cancer and Obesity Prevention. As well, volunteers had an opportunity to tour the slums areas where HIV positive families are served
by SHCH social workers and community health workers.
Through Their Eyes:

It is always a lot more inspirational and thought provoking, as well as interesting, to hear about a trip like this from someone who was on it. Those who went have much to say about what they saw, gave, learned, etc. In order to not cut anything out, you can click on the links below to read personal accounts from a few of the individuals that volunteered on this trip.
