HOPE worldwide & the Alaska Chapter
HOPE worldwide (http://www.hopeww.org) is an international faith-based charity. Its worldwide vision is simple: “to bring hope and change the lives of the world's most poor, sick and suffering.” HOPE worldwide’s projects
and programs vary widely and have included disaster relief in
Louisiana, Haiti and the Philippines, AIDS clinics in several African
countries, a community hospital in Cambodia, and youth development
programs throughout the U.S. HOPE worldwide’s partners include
the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, United
Way International, and Youth Service America.
The Alaska Chapter localizes HOPE
worldwide’s international
vision. Its founders believe that true hope and change come through
empowerment, not enablement. The chapter’s vision is to empower Alaska’s
youth and their families to overcome local challenges by engaging them
through mentoring, providing positive role models and helping them grow
as people. Volunteers construct the foundation of all programs and
services.
Since
the Alaska Chapter’s launch, it has facilitated a variety of volunteer
projects around the state. The Youth Corps in Kotzebue was our most
recent major project. Volunteers from Anchorage have also traveled at
their own expense to rural communities like Metlakatla and Tok to do
complete renovations of Boys & Girls Club community centers. In June
2010 the Alaska Chapter worked with HOPE
worldwide’s Washington
Chapter as well as the North Slope Borough, North Slope Borough School
District, and ASRC to bring the “Top of the World Camp” to Barrow. Over
100 students from around the North Slope attended the camp and received
professional training in sports, arts, entertainment, and leadership.
Finally, HOPE worldwide has ongoing projects and programs in
Anchorage. In partnership with local organizations, it provides regular
service opportunities for volunteers like community cleanup events,
fundraisers, and holiday drives. It also works with the Anchorage School
District to provide an afterschool enrichment program at the Alaska
Native Cultural Charter School.
